If I lose my car’s ignition key can a locksmith make me a new one?

There are all types of subsets of locksmiths that specialize in different fields of the profession. There are locksmiths that specialize in changing locks, rekeying locks, and gaining entry for customers who are locked out of their cars or homes. One of the more complex, dynamic fields of the trade is specializing in automotive work.  Locksmiths that are “ignition specialists” have the capability of fashioning a new key, programming an ignition key if it has a chip in it, and even replacing a car’s entire ignition!

The prices of the services rendered rely on several factors, one of them being the make and model of the vehicle and the level of intricacy manifested in its ignition and key system. Pre new millennium models tend to have simpler, fundamentally developed ignition systems. The keys that are implemented in these types of models usually comprise basic brass frames with no electronic components.  Fabricating a key for these types of cars typically ranges in price from 120 to 350 dollars.

Post millennium car models, however, typically incorporate more elaborate ignition systems which implement electronic computer chips that must be programmed and synchronized to that specific vehicle itself.  These chips are known as transponder chips, and naturally, the keys that they incorporate are referred to as transponder keys. Transponder chips were conceived as a tool in positively identifying the exact key that was originally manufactured for the car. The ignition of a transponder vehicle functions to scan the key’s chip and deduce whether or not it is the same exact key. If it is not, the ignition will not activate. This provision minimizes or even eliminates the potential for car theft by means of hot wiring or employing a counterfeit key. The price range for a mobile locksmith to formulate a key for a transponder vehicle spans from 140 to 600 dollars. Concocting transponder keys is more costly due to the fact that it entails a greater volume of labor to program the key accordingly to the ignition. Also, it is not uncommon for the locksmith to be forced to order additional hardware components to fit onto the chip- which means executing the service will even be more expensive for the technician themselves!

There are instances where simply fashioning a new key is an inadequate course of action, primarily when the ignition itself begins to malfunction. Over time, ignition systems become weathered by attrition and begin to falter, and eventually cease working altogether. Under these circumstances, the technician will need to replace the existing ignition with a brand new one- which he will need to order himself as well! Automotive services that require ignition replacements are respectively more expensive for vehicles that incorporate transponder systems for the aforementioned reasons, as well as the fact that the technician will need to program the ignition as well as the chip in the key. The pricing for replacing a non transponder ignition for a vehicle and molding a new key for it typically falls between 140 and 450 dollars. Rendering the same service for a transponder vehicle, conversely, can cost from anywhere between 165 and 750 dollars
